Legal
At times, preservation organizations have been compelled to take legal action to fight against unlawful or contested building demolitions in the city of Detroit. Preservation Wayne and its partners stand at the ready to guarantee that local, state and federal laws are upheld and honored. With your support, our mission to protect Detroit’s architectural heritage is ensured.
Several high-profile demolitions representing a range of architectural styles and cultural significance have merited legal action and national attention. Recent controversial demolitions include:
- Little Harry’s Restaurant (former Chene House): One of Detroit’s oldest residences was demolished for an International House of Pancakes.
- JL Hudson’s Department Store: One of America’s most important and largest department stores was one of the largest buildings ever demolished in America. There is no current plan for this site.
- Statler-Hilton Hotel Once one of Detroit’s finest hotels, this prominent structure on Grand Circus Park was demolished using State of Michigan Clean Initiative Bond Money. There is no current plan for this site.
- Madison-Lenox Hotel: One of downtown Detroit’s oldest and finest remaining examples of residential apartment dwelling was demolished using a loan secured by the Downtown Development Authority. There is no current plan for this site.
