Endangered

In June of 2005, the National Trust for Historic Preservation added all of the historic buildings of downtown Detroit to its list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.

This is the fourth time Detroit has appeared on the Trust’s list. Listings in previous years included Tiger Stadium (1991 and 1992) and the now-demolished Madison-Lenox (2004).

In Detroit, there are thousands of historic sites and structures that are endangered and underutilized, from modest frame worker housing to Victorian mansions, from commercial storefronts to factory buildings, and from great public buildings to soaring skyscrapers.

In response, Preservation Wayne has launched its evolving Historic Building Inventory to chart our city’s designated historic resources and identify additional assets that are eligible for inclusion.

How can you help protect Detroit’s endangered buildings?

  • Promote better preservation policy at the local and state level.
  • Demand that laws designed to protect historic structures and neighborhoods are upheld.
  • Raise your voice and take action to protect viable buildings.
  • Join Preservation Wayne and support our work with a tax-deductible donation.
