My father was the vice-president of the projectionist union and a friend of Howard Houghes. He worked at the Michigan Theatre for many years. As kids we were allowed to roam the theatre before the doors were open to the public. Just by coincidence, I went to school with Robert Gniewick-the artist that painted many well known Movie Houses. Google Robert Gniewick for samples.
Regina Kuper [Visitor] c13@http://www.preservationwayne.org/blogs/ We totally agree with you about the short sighted and unprogressive plan to demolish so many homes, let alone not even deconstructing them. Spending a lot of time in Santa Cruz,Ca.,San Francisco,Denver, Chicago and most of all New Orleans, we are always sickened by the approach Detroit takes to urban planning, urban renewal in general, and the lack of respect for the craftsmanhip that went into even the most modest of these dwellings. How can we educate people against the phrase "New therefore better", Detroit's auto-engineering mantra.? http://www.preservationwayne.org/blogs/index.php?blog=4&title=hatchet-based-demolition-back-again&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1#c13

garrick [Member] c11@http://www.preservationwayne.org/blogs/ Hi-Thanks for commenting!

The intent of my blog is to provide a perspective on American urban life from outside of the city of Detroit, written by someone who is pretty familiar with the city and its multitudinous challenges. Since 1997, I’ve lived in both New York and now Los Angeles with twice annual visits back to the city, so my aim is to share with Detroit readers what is going on in these other places; the pitfalls and opportunities that might lie ahead.

As I mentioned in the entry, I’m certainly not in mourning for Santa Monica Place (a mall, after all!), and in general the quality of historic fabric in Los Angeles is marginal (literally, sub-urban) compared to Detroit’s rich and beautifully textured streetscape. But because Los Angeles is so marinated with Hollywood history, these local movie “landmarks”, however humble or banal they may be, do give the city a sense-of-place that is surprisingly strong, even to a visitor like me with no emotional connection to growing up in the city. (The recent fire at Universal studios, which destroyed many famous film sets, is an even more explicit example.)

My blog entries have been (and will continue to be) quite varied and eclectic, with an aim of giving people ideas about what might (or might not) be a good idea in Detroit. I have also tried to bring some attention to urgent problems, such as the one you raised, that are causing Detroit to slip further behind and are imperiling the gains made in the last generation of preservation. I am only a member of Preservation Wayne, and will pass your comment on to Francis, but I will use this blog's 'bully pulpit' as much as possible to aid these efforts. If you haven’t become a PW member, please do so now and mention the importance of this issue in your application.

As Detroit rebuilds, decisions will have to be made about how to build and what to develop. The preservation of beautiful neighborhoods and landmarks is only part of the puzzle; for a future Detroit we’ll need new development that (at a minimum) matches the quality of the best of the old, and draws from the recent lessons of other American cities and our shared urban experiences. We’ll of course need preserved historic buildings (complete with their copper and precious fixtures), but also walkable neighborhoods, secure streets, sensitive zoning, beautiful parks, talented architects, spirited urban designers, and concerned citizens who will demand all of this and more of their community leadership. This has been and remains one of Detroit’s greatest challenges; the urge to accept any development whatsoever regardless of the construction quality or urban merits of the proposed project.

As an architectural designer and urbanist, I feel it is critical to highlight what makes urban life so wonderful, and the design decisions (pedestrian connectivity and harmony with climate, in this instance) that can push Detroit towards being a great and livable city. It is hoped that my "distant" perspective will help draw out these themes in addition to the daily concerns about Detroit's ongoing issues. There are many other Detroit websites, Lowell Boileau's excellent "detroityes.com" among them, that have a better ear-to-the-street on what's going on in the city and have very active discussions on urgent matters. Nevertheless, I'll try to generate more posts about current issues in Detroit preservation right now; to do this I'll need feedback from you, and ideas on what might be done and specifically what Preservation Wayne can do to harness the creative energy of its members in building a future while we protect the past.

Lisa Rush [Visitor] c10@http://www.preservationwayne.org/blogs/ I am sorry to hear about what is going on in Santa Monica. It's probably a shame to lose a landmark, but it is a little hard for me to appreciate since I live in Detroit and we have enough destructed landmarks and issues here.

Any chance we could get some info out here on the metal stripping of abandoned buildings (and parked cars) in our city? I'm told that now recent changes that should help this destruction, maybe? I know PW was involved in this issue in the past, but haven't heard much since.
