Preservation Wayne emerged from a group of concerned students who questioned authority and evolved the preservation debate. Today, the David Mackenzie House and a restored Ferry Street stand as testament to what can happen when concerned citizens take action to preserve irreplaceable buildings and neighborhoods.

Take Action

  • Protect Tax Credits - Don’t let the State of Michigan’s historic rehabilitation tax credit be dismantled. Write your State Representative today and tell them that Michigan’s historic rehabilitation tax credit program is critical to the economic vitality of our state.
  • Promote Economic Development - Tell your Mayor and City Council members that preservation is a vital economic development tool, as demonstrated in cities across the country, from Atlanta to Chicago to San Francisco.
  • Nurture Your Neighborhood - Get involved in the Detroit Historic Neighborhoods Coalition to improve the quality of life and foster stability in our community. Attend a Historic Districts Commission meeting to learn about the process and to voice your support for preserving viable structures.
  • Demand Enlightened Leadership - Support candidates that support preservation!
  • Educate the Media - Contact your local media to tell them how important preservation is to the future of Detroit and demand more in-depth coverage of preservation issues.

    Detroit News
    Detroit Free Press
    Metro Times
    WJBK - Channel 2
    WDIV - Channel 4
    WXYZ - Channel 7
    WWJ - Channel 62

  • Educate Your Neighbors - Next time a friend or colleague disses Detroit ("Go ahead, let ‘em tear down those eyesores!"), politely share with them the economic and social benefits of preservation. If that doesn’t work, consider giving them a gift certificate for a guided walking tour to discover Detroit’s rich architectural heritage.
